About Life Insurance
Most owner operators and contractors I speak with have life insurance somewhere on the list and nowhere on paper. The questions worth answering are simple: if you were gone, could your family keep the house and clear the truck loan or the line of credit? And if you have a partner, could they buy out your share without forcing a sale?
Life insurance is arranged through MSW Financial, my life and living benefits practice, which is where quotes and applications for these products are handled.

What life insurance is usually bought to solve
- A mortgage or personal debt that would remain after a death
- A business loan, equipment loan or line of credit personally guaranteed by the owner
- A partner needing to buy out a deceased owner's share from their family
- The loss of a key person the business could not immediately replace
- Final expenses and the income a family would otherwise lose
- Estate and tax planning objectives, which are handled with your accountant or lawyer
Types of coverage commonly considered
Term life insurance
Coverage for a set period — commonly 10, 20 or 30 years — at a fixed cost for the term. Often used against a mortgage, a loan or the years until children are independent.
Whole life and universal life
Permanent coverage with a savings or investment component, used in estate and business planning as well as protection.
Key person insurance
Owned by the business on the life of an owner or key employee, to give the business time and money to recover.
Buy-sell funding
Coverage arranged so surviving owners can purchase a deceased owner's share under a buy-sell agreement.
Critical illness insurance
Pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a covered condition as defined in the contract — a living benefit rather than a death benefit.
Disability insurance
Income protection for self-employed people and owner operators whose income stops if they cannot work.
What an application involves
- 1How much coverage is actually needed, and for how long
- 2Who should own the policy — you personally, or the business
- 3Who the beneficiary should be, and how that fits any agreements already in place
- 4Health and lifestyle questions, and in some cases a medical
- 5Whether term, permanent, or a combination fits the objective and the budget
- 6How the coverage should be reviewed as the business and family change
FAQ
Common questions
How much life insurance do I need?
It depends on what the money has to do. A common starting point is to total the debts that would remain, add the income a family would need for a defined period, add any business obligations you have personally guaranteed, and subtract existing coverage and liquid assets. The number that falls out is a starting point for a conversation, not a rule.
Should the business own the policy or should I?
It depends on the purpose. Coverage intended to protect a family is usually personally owned; coverage intended to fund a buy-sell agreement or protect a lender is often owned by the business. There are tax implications on both sides, so this is a conversation to have alongside your accountant.
Can I get coverage if I have a health condition?
Often, yes, though it may be at a rated premium or with conditions, and it varies by insurer and by condition. Working with several insurers is exactly why this is worth doing through a broker rather than a single company.
Why does the life insurance quote go to a different website?
Because life and living benefits are handled through MSW Financial, my separate life insurance practice, while commercial property and casualty business is placed through Sonic Insurance. Same person, two licences, two places the paperwork lives.
